Description: YOSHIMOTO GESSO JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINT Bird on a Flowering Cherry Branch Size: 5" X 9.5" inches (Print) / 8" X 12.5" (Frame) The Woodblock Print Condition: This woodblock print is in fair condition; it has strong colors but is discolorated from elements over time, unfortunately. The frame is missing its glass, which is, in part, the cause of the discoloration to the paper. I took the print out of its frame for picturing purposes and will carefully return it after listing. This print shows a beautiful bird on a flowering cherry tree. It has a Yoshimoto Gesso signature on the bottom, right side. I am unsure of its age. It was purchased from an estate sale of a collector who had many Japanese art work. The frame is in tact and sturdy, however missing the glass and with cosmetic wear (chips/indents). About the Artist: Yoshimoto Gesso is known for a large number of landscapes and kacho-e (images of birds and flowers) designs published by Hasegawa and Nishinomiya, but little else is biographically known about him. These designs were very well crafted with artistic compositions made presumably for the export/foreign market. His work is very painterly, leading some to believe that he was a trained painter whose works were commissioned, and then transformed into woodblocks by the professional carvers and printers at Hasegawa and Nishinomiya, but that is speculation.
