Description: The Zuni Indians are a pueblo tribe from western New Mexico who have inhabited that region since at least 1100 AD. Zuni fetishes are hand carved pieces of natural materials, depicting animals or other symbols of the Zuni connection to nature and all that is. These fine carvings have many uses: for trade, religious ceremonial use, luck in hunting, ensuring rain, enhancing fertility and propagation, diagnosing and curing disease, or any area of their lives where they feel help is needed. Andres Quandelacy is the most prolific of the large Quandelacy carving family, due to his strong work ethic. When not working at cattle ranching, he is always seen at this carving bench. Andres carves very sleek distinctive mountain lions, bears (some with finely-incised fur) realistic horses and numerous other beautiful creatures. Most have heartlines on only one side of the fetish. His unique style makes his detailed fetish carvings easily recognizable. He has received international acclaim for his unique fetish carvings, pendants, and fetish necklaces. Andres is one of the well-known Quandelacy carving siblings, which includes Georgia, Faye, Sandra, Stewart, Albenita, and Avery. This Mountain Lion is carved from Catlinite, the common name is Pipestone, and the heartline is turquoise. Pipestone (Catlinite) is the sacred red clay stone that American Indians use for making prayer and ceremonial pipes. It is found in only a few places in the world. The best quality pipestone comes from southwestern Minnesota. Pipestone is smooth to the touch, can be easily carved and takes a high polish. The mountain lion is the protective and hunting animal of the North. It is believed that the mountain lion is the most powerful fetish a hunter can possess. They also provide protection to travelers. This fetish comes from my personal collection. I have collected Southwestern items since the 1970's. I purchased this mountain lion new in the 1990's and I am including the Certificate of Authenticity I received at that time. Never out of style, Southwestern art is an investment in enjoyment to last a lifetime. Questions??? Please ask before purchasing to avoid any misunderstandings.
